Lewis innings ensures win

A fine innings of 67 by Maia Lewis enabled Sydenham to win outright against St Albans in an exciting senior women’s club cricket match at Sydenham Park on Saturday. The other match between Lancaster Park and Riccarton was drawn. St Albans was forced to follow on by Sydenham, 106 runs behind the Sydenham first innings total of 220.

Although a wicket fell early St Albans produced a much improved batting display. A second wicket partnership between Mandy Ormandy and Sarah Illingworth added 92, of which Illingworth made a sparkling 61 including two sweetly timed sixes.

Subsequent batswomen Brigit Legg and Vicki Burtt were also in fine touch both scoring half centuries, and putting on 122 for the fourth wicket.

At 246 for three St Albans was able to declare leaving Sydenham 141 to score in 24 overs.

In a match-winning performance Lewis blasted an aggressive 67 to win the game for Sydenham.

Valuable assistance came from Andrea Devine (27) and Jenny Turner (19). The winning runs came in the last over.

At Porritt Park, Lancaster Park avoided the follow-on but trailed Riccarton by 80 on the first innings. Batting a second time Riccarton reached 127 for two before declaring at afternoon tea. Lesley Murdoch continued her fine form with a sound 54 while the consistent Debbie Ford and Katrina Withers also reached the twenties.

Lancaster Park had an hour plus 20 overs to make 207 but the batswomen found the required five runs an over beyond them. Both Sarah Helmore and Trudy Anderson played some attractive shots in scoring 26 each. Lancaster Park finished at 69 for two, never threatening the target. ST ALBANS v.
