Sidhu absent from side
NZPA-AFP New Delhi Najvot Singh Sidhu was a surprise absentee from the 16-member Indian cricket party which left for Barbados on Saturday at the start of a 10-week tour.
Contrary to earlier reports on State-run television that Sidhu was in the party which flew from Bombay to New York, Polly Umrigar, the executive secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, told the Press Trust of India that the date of Sidhu’s departure had not yet been fixed.
Sidhu, who faces a murder charge for allegedly
beating a man to death in a brawl on December 27, was cleared by a court in Chandigarh on Friday to join the tour. The captain, Dilip Vengsarkar, said on television that “the team had a good blend of youth and experience and would do well against the formidable West Indies.”
The Indians will start the tour with a four-day match against the President’s XI in Barbados, on March 2, and are scheduled to play four test matches and five one-day internationals against the West Indies before returning home on May 10.
