Tokyo closing

NZPA-Reuter Tokyo

The lives of residents in western Tokyo will come to a virtual standstill tomorrow, the day of Emperor Hirohito’s funeral.

The Government has asked that all forms of entertainment and festivity be halted on that day, designated a special national holiday. All the main companies, banks and government offices will be closed.

Road traffic in the western half of the capital, home to millions of residents, will be paralysed for most of the day because of the funeral procession.

Meanwhile, a Japanese Leftist radical group hinted yesterday it might launch a bomb attack during the funeral but said a large-scale terrorist attack was unlikely, the Kyodo news service reported.
