Surfers rescued from rip

Seven surfers were rescued after ignoring repeated warnings of a treacherous rip at Scarborough Beach last evening. The Sumner Lifeboat Institution’s jet-boat spent 1 >/ 2 hours in heavy seas pulling exhausted board riders ashore. They had been caught in a five-knot undertow.

The institutions’ secretary, Mr Walter Baguley, said the rescues would have been avoided if the board riders had shown some common sense.

"We took the jet-boat out twice to tell them to come in. They wouldn’t. They ignored us,” he said.

“I’m very despondent and angry. As soon as they got caught in the rip they were waving their arms and wanting help. Their actions put our rescue people’s lives in danger.”

Mr Baguley said many of the board riders had gone into the surf in the middle of the undertow and were carried out immediately towards open sea.
