Australia may be out as refuge
PA Wellington Students who finish their tertiary education and go to Australia to live are unlikely to escape having to repay loans.
The Government announced this week that tertiary students would have to repay up to $lBOO a year from next year under a new loan system. They would have to start the repayments once they were earning near or above the average income.
A spokeswoman for the Associate Minister of Education, Mr Goff, said today that Australia and New Zealand might have a reciprocal agreement soon so people could not get out of paying back loans. She said Australia had introduced a similar loans scheme so New Zealanders living there would pay back the Australian Government while Australians living here would pay back the New Zealand Government.
Similar health and pension reciprocal agreements already existed between New Zealand and Australia and the loans proposal was being looked at by officials.
Those who finished their tertiary education and went to other countries to live would have a “civil debt” in New Zealand which they would probably have to repay once they returned, she said.
Mr Goff was hoping for the minor details of the proposal to be settled soon.
