Defence to be studied again
By
BRENDON BURNS,
political reporter Another study on security and defence issues is to be paid for by the Government. The taxpayer-funded Public Advisory Committee on Disarmament and Arms Control has decided to initiate a thorough, long-term study of New Zealand’s security. The committee’s chairman, Ms Fran Wilde, said this would not simply be a review of military requirements. “The committee hopes to be able to produce an analysis of New Zealand’s security options which will lead to recommendations for some constructive and peaceful initiatives.” Options to be examined may include New Zealand playing a mediation role in international conflicts, she said.
Another suggestion is that New Zealand become a repository for computer-stored information which may be endangered in a nuclear conflict. It was not expected the study would be a large-scale public inquiry, said Ms Wilde.
