Pressure on Europe
Political reporter The European Community has to soften its opposition to fundamental reform of agricultural trade, according to the Minister for External Relations and Trade, Mr Moore. A softening of United States demands for freer trade in farm products has been interpreted -by Australia as putting pressure on the European Community to respond. Mr Moore said this view, expressed by Australia’s Minister for Trade
Negotiations, was correct. The positive overture from the United States made it important for a European response before next month’s meeting of the Cairns Group. This group, which includes New Zealand and other agricultural exporting countries, holds a meeting at Waitangi from March 17-19. It will discuss progress in reforming the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs, which governs world trade.
