Arsenal’s dream run ended

NZPA-Reuter London Arsenal was beaten for the first time in 12 league matches yesterday but retained a four-point lead in the English soccer first division as its nearest challenger, Norwich, also lost. Arsenal was beaten, 1-0, at Coventry but London neighbour Tottenham Hotspur did it a favour by defeating second-placed Norwich, 2-1. The Coventry captain, Brian Kilcline, failed to convert a penalty with the match barely a minute old but made ample amends eight minutes from time after the Arsenal defender, Steve Bould,

handled a Brian Borrows free-kick.

Spurs took the lead against Norwich after 13 minutes through Paul Gascoigne but Trevor Putney equalised in the fifty-second minute, tapping the ball home after Tottenham’s Norwegian goalkeeper, Erik Thorstvedt, could only parry a shot by Dale Gordon.

The England international wing, Chris Waddle, who had troubled the Norwich defence throughout, grabbed the Spurs winner 25 minutes from the end with a narrowangled shot to consign Norwich to only its second away defeat of the season.
