Vaulted ceilings and the backdrop of a spectacular Gothic window made a dramatic setting for this teenager's bedroom. It is high up — in the loft space on the third level — in an apartment in Cranmer Courts.

The stone wall surrounding the window has been left exposed and provides a striking contrast to the exposed beams and ceiling that slopes almost to floor level, painted in neutral tonings.

Red is the accent colour for furnishings and fittings.. The duvet cover, valance, pillowcase are a bright, cheerful red, as is the tubular steel bed, chairs, bedside table, bookcase, rubbish bin, coatstand and pot plants.

A rich golden carpet adds the finishing touches to a perfectly co-ordinated colour scheme.

Lighting is provided by spotlights beamed down from the ceiling, an angle with poise lamp on the desk, meeting the needs of a busy student.

The apartment was designed by the Christchurch architects, Sheppard ana Rout, who were presented with an award for it last year. Photograph by Lloyd Park Photography by courtesy of Sheppard and Rout Architects and Planners.
