Call to ‘step outside’

PA Auckland The Mayor of Waitemata, Tim Shadbolt, challenged a fellow councillor to step into the carpark to settle their differences at a council committee meeting on Tuesday evening. Simmering antagonism between councillors surfaced at the finance and policy meeting when the mayor threw down the gauntlet to Councillor Peter Furze.

The committee was discussing damage control measures for its $6 million investment frozen in the failed finance company, Equiticorp, when Councillor Furze started to object. The mayor muttered “surprise,

surprise.” Councillor Furze retorted, “What’s that? Dribbling again?” “Step into the car-park and I’ll show you dribbling,” Mr Shadbolt shouted.

“Every time you insult me I invite you out there, but ‘chook, chook, chook’,” the mayor said, imitating a chicken to imply Councillor Furze was frightened of a confrontation.

The slanging match ended as other councillors called on Mr Shadbolt to control himself. Later the mayor said the council was under a lot of pressure and that had caused the exchange.
