Help for young cancer patients
A support group for young adults with cancer, and their families, was launched yesterday by the Minister of Youth Affairs, Mr Goff.
Called Can Teen Plus, the group is based on Can Teen, the teen-age cancer patients’ society. A co-founder of the group, Ms Ann Starr, said the group aimed to provide members with education, information and support. “Because young adults have the added responsibility of a young family, a mortgage and establishing
a career, there is a need for a support group,” Ms Starr said. “We are looking at surviving with cancer, not dying from it. Cancer
patients need to be encouraged to be active participants in the care they are receiving from the system.” Can Teen Plus would draw on the experience and knowledge of cancer survivors, a resource often overlooked, Ms Starr said. The group would meet monthly with invited speakers
