Man dies in shop accident

PA Masterton A Masterton man, injured when a shotgun exploded in a sporting goods store, died in hospital yesterday, 3y 2 hours after the incident. He was Michael Carter, a locksmith. He was rushed to Masterton Hospital with critical injuries to his head and upper body after a shotgun went off in the workroom of the King and Henry Sports Shop in Queens Street. The Westpac rescue helicopter was on standby at the hospital while staff worked to stabilise Mr Carter’s condition before deciding whether to transfer him to Wellington Hospital. However, Mr Carter died about noon.

Senior-Sergeant Maurice Boyd, of the Masterton police, said the police were called to the store at 8.30 a.m.

He said a shotgun was being repaired by another employee when it went off and Mr Carter was hit in the upper body.

The shop’s part-owner, Tony Roseingrave, said Mr Carter had been working for the shop for the last 40 years.
