Baby no bar to mayoral bid
By NIGEL MALTHUS Impending motherhood will make no difference to Ms Vicki Buck’s decision on whether to contest the mayoralty of the new metropolitan Christchurch City. Ms Buck, a Labour councillor on the present city council and a member of the Local Government Commission, is expecting her first child in June. She is regarded as the Labour Party’s most likely choice as mayoral candidate, but while she has expressed some interest, will not commit herself to seeking the candidacy. “I’m not wanting to say at the moment.” The baby, however, would not be a factor in her decision, she said yesterday. ~ L . The baby would be due five days after the Labour Party selection meeting, expected to be on June 6 — later than usual for an October election. The rival Citizens Association will name its mayoral candidate on March 2. • ' Now aged 33, Ms Buck has been a councillor since the age of 19. Her husband, Mr Rob McKay, . recently bought Guthrie Financial Corporation in Christchurch after that firm went into receivership, and is now trading as Southern Cor- , porate Services.
