Search for seamen called off

PA Wellington A last-ditch air search to find the Japanese seamen missing from the Sankichi Maru 18 has failed to find them and the search will not be continued, a Foreign Affairs spokesman said yesterday. After a request from the Japanese Government for the search to continue,

an Air Force Orion was sent out for nine hours, the spokesman, Mr Chris Butler, said. “That search was conducted just to exhaust the last possibility that they might be found.” The Japanese Embassy had been advised that the search, one of the longest to take place off New Zealand, would not con-

tinue, he said. The ship was engulfed in a fireball, believed to have been caused by an explosion from propane bottles, two weeks ago. A Japanese Embassy official said this week he was satisfied with the way the search had been conducted, but disappointed the seamen had not been found.
