Skin cancer checks find 120

PA Wellington Cancer Society free spot-checks have picked up 120 suspected malignant melanoma in the last three months. The Wellington division’s education officer, Ms Shirley Robertson, said nearly 8000 people had been checked. Many cases of the other two skin cancers, basal and

squamous, were detected.

An Australian skin-can-cer expert, Dr Robin Marks, is to review the success of the campaign.

Dr Marks is the Leadenhall Fellow for 1988-89. The Leadenhall Charitable Trust has provided a fellowship through the Wellington division of the Cancer Society to a specialist working in an area

of concern to the society.

The division’s chief executive, Mr Max Ritchie, said Dr Marks helped launch the melanona campaign dur-, ing his first visit to New Zealand on the fellowship in July last year. Dr Marks is programme director for the Anti-Can-cer Council of Australia.
