Spirit of N.Z. back in port

By

PAM MORTON

The training ship Spirit of New Zealand is back in Canterbury waters preparing for the next intake of South Island secondaryschool pupils. The sailing ship arrived at Lyttelton on Thursday and will sail for Wellington on Tuesday with 40 pupils on board. Before sailing for the North Island, the ship will go on a two-day cruise of Banks Peninsula with passengers from . Christchurch. 7? The ship’s first mate, Mr Steve Gamble, said week-end cruises helped subsidise the cost of the 10-day training programme. Those taking the programme have to pay $590, but without subsidy the trip could cost as much as $lOOO, said Mr Gamble. Passengers on the week-end cruises pay $135 a day. Mr Ganble said the training programme had developed a lot since being implemented 15 years ago. Trainees spend 10 days on the ship learning how to sail the vessel and taking turns on watch. The Spirit of New Zealand will return again in April to pick up another shipload of South Island school pupils.
