ROWING The Avon seniors turned the tables on Christ’s College in the open eights when the Kerrs Reach rowing regatta was raced at the week-end. As predicted, only those two crews were really in the race after their battle in the Canterbury championships at Lake Ruataniwha. Christ’s College is building up for its defence of the Maadi Cup national secondary schools eight-oared title at Lake Karapiro next month. It won the open eights at , the Canterbury championships in a fast time and looked likely again for much of the race on the Reach. Christ’s College led for most of the distance, was' caught with about 700 metres to go and after a good contest the Avon senior eight won by a canvas. It was a different story on the Sunday when the Christ’s College oarsmen were looking fairly tired. The Avon crew, stroked by Scott Brownlee, moved away after the first 1000 m to win by two and a half lengths. Two of the Avon oarsmen, in particular, would have enjoyed the victory. Both Nick McGowan and Alistair Middleton were in the Christ’s College Maadi Cup-winning eight last season. Avon’s yellow Viv Haar eight-oared shell had been regeared for the regatta. In the fours the two days of racing showed some remarkable reversals. Christ’s College beat Canterbury by nearly three seconds with Avon only third on Saturday but in the Sunday race victory went to Avon by more than 6s from Christ’s College.
