Satellite soap ‘upmarket’

By

TONY VERDON

London Correspondent Britain’s Sky satellite television channel is to commission an upmarket series to attract viewers away from 8.8. C. and Independent Television soaps. The managing director of Sky Television, Mr Jim Styles, said the series would be different from “Coronation Street” and “East enders.” “It could be more ‘period’ and

probably more upmarket.” The satellite series was unlikely to appear before the middle of 1990. By then, satellite dish sales should have made Sky’s four channels an attractive medium for advertisers. Meanwhile a leading manufacturer of satellite television receiving equipment has predicted that more than a million British homes will have dishes or “squarials” by the end of this year.
