Smoking

Sir,—My husband died from, emphysema, an incurable' disease caused by smoking, although he had not done so for several years. I nursed him for approximately two years and watched its deadly progress, which transformed him from a virile, active, handsome man into someone who resembled a Belsen victim. Cigarette smoke destroys the lungs, and the inability to draw oxygen into them and so breathe easily causes much anguish to the sufferer who, as time goes on, becomes increasingly weak. In my husband’s case his skin was adversely affected and, as he was elderly and owing to medication, his ribs became brittle and cracked. I think this terrible disease is to be feared as much as A.I.D.S. is. I would urge all those who still smoke not to commit suicide in this horrible way.—Yours, etc.,
