Woolston-Cardinals top table
The Woolston-Cardinals premier men’s softballers can now pack their bags for the national inter-club tournament in Auckland next month.
Their top position on the points table for the post-Christmas competition is now inviolable after the results of twilight games yesterday.
While Woolston-Cardi-nals shaded Merivale through a fifth-inning Mike Rush home run at
Nun week Park its nearest rival, Suburbs, was beaten, 2-1, by Burnside in a tenth-inning tiebreaker. Cardinals, having its first full season in premier softball, will thus be Canterbury’s representative at the tournament, from March 15 to 19. At Burnside High School Burnside had an early 1-0 lead. Suburbs finally tying up the game in the top of the seventh
and forcing it into extra innings. After the third tiebreak innings Graeme Anderson came home for Burnside to break the deadlock. Papanui’s big-hitting Steve Paul was responsible for all his team’s runs in its 3-2 win over Richmond at Papanui Domain. His automatic home run between centre field and right field in the top of the first inning also brought in Tim Hickey and Tony Bishop.
Earlier results: Merivale 7, Papanui 3; Richmond 4, Burnside 2; Woolston-Cardinals 2, Royals 0; Papanui 4, Suburbs 1; Burnside 2, Merivale 1.
