Southern cinema manager appointed

A Southern regional manager for the cinema chain Pacer Kerridge Corporation has been appointed at its Christchurch office.

Mr Mark Smith, who was previously the senior manager for the corporation in Christchurch, will now have responsibility for the region from Christchurch southwards.

Mr Trevor King, the manager of the Avon Cinema in Worcester Street, who has been associated with the cinema industry for 45 years, will retire next week.

The corporation announced last year that the Avon had no future and would eventually be closed when a multicinema complex was built in a Christchurch suburb, possibly this year. Four projectionists at Pacer Kerridge cinemas in Queen Street, Auckland, have been made redundant after the corporation decided to scrap morning, movie screenings there. The cinema and retail operations senior vicepresident, Mr Milje Francis, said the loss of jobs and scrapping of morning sessions were regrettable but were necessary to cut costs and bring the company into line with overseas..

Mr Smith said the corporation’s Christchurch cinemas had not had morning screenings for some time because the size of the city’s population did not warrant them.
