Happy Hazel ready for winning run

By JEFF SCOTT Happy Hazel, which has claims to being the top South Island three-year-old filly, should return to winning form in the Great Northern Bloodstock Pace, the first leg of the T.A.B. double, at the New Brighton Harness Racing Club’s meeting this evening.

The promising daughter of Alberton and Jovial Jeanie was in need of racing when she resumed in the opening South Island D.B. Draught Fillies’ Heats earlier this month and should improve further for tonight's C 3 pace at Addington Raceway. She fought tenaciously for a close third in the Marlborough D.B. heat nine days ago, after leading, and should be better suited by the 2600 m distance here, even though she will be racing against older opposition. Happy Hazel showed her class in November when she trounced a C2 field by three lengths in national record time for a filly over 2000 m of 2:28.3, a mile rate of 1:59.4, and 1.7 seconds quicker than Michele Bromac’s former record.

winning second-up at Addington in September and he has a second-row draw to contend with tonight.

14 1202 Family Pride 2 K. Balloch 30 Big late run at Forbury (3200 m last time after early break. Consistent southerner which must be tough. (38-6-10, $32,565). 16 3314 Amy Hest 4 D. Townley 30 Has been a model of consistency in her racing but not sq well suited by handicap. Good enough to place again however. (29-6-10, $31,075). Scratched: Miss Govern. Race 6 D 8.15 GREAT NORTHERN BLOODSTOCK PACE $6000; C 3; 2600 m 1 8802 Satanic 1 R. Silver Beam went well enough in two outings at Nelson last month to have each-way prospects, while Shy Mark heralded a return to form with an improver’s third on the second day of the Marlborough meeting. High Gun was just beaten at Oamaru after having a hard run in the open, while Satanic is another worthy of consideration after a game placing last time at Addington after also being parked. Twilight Time and Paleface Walla are other form runners but their place chances look brightest. Bardolino, a fortuitous promoted winner over Gasthof when they last clashed at Addington Raceway, will be a popular fancy for the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the French Bakery Mobile Pace over 2600 m. Much interest will be taken in Bardolino’s performance as a lead-up to the John Brandon New Zealand Derby next month, run over the same distance from behind the mobile gate.

Wood Chip, a sound fourth behind Blue Innocence and company in the Anngow Four-Year-Old Championship at Forbury last time out, could prove the best of Happy Hazel’s rivals. The useful West Melton entire could not quicken after trailing at Forbury but is due to advance to a C 4 mark at any time. Placings have been his lot since
