New lease of life for monastery?
St Gerard’s Monastery in the Wellington suburb of Mount Victoria could receive a new lease of life as a Catholic institution. Both the Historic Places Trust and the Wellington City Council are anxious to preserve the Gothicstyle church and monastery which have occupied a commanding position overlooking Wellington HarSbur for the last 80
years. At a special meeting of Catholics recently plans were discussed for the building to be bought and leased to the International Catholic Programme of Evangelisation (1.C.P.E.) as its Pacific Basin headquarters for the next 10 years. The monastery accommodation would be used as an administrative and conference Cjjptre.
