Glittering array of jewellery
With lighting alterations completed and new stock in place, Pascoes’ Canterbury Centrd store has a message for customers old and new: “We’re still here, the doors are open and everyone is welcome.”
Although the shop now bears duty free signs, this does hot mean that it is aiming solely for the tourist market. All jewellery in New Zealand has been duty free since the introduction of GST, and you no longer need an overseas passport to take advantage of the prices and the selection. As the store’s manager, Robyn Hyland, says, “Everybody’s welcome to come into the store. It’s called a duty free, but let that be no barrier.”
Today, everybody is also welcome to a glass of champagne while they view Pascoe’s stock. The store is now specialising in jade and
opal alongside its more traditional lines. Black, white and boulder opals are imported from Australia, and set in pendants, rings and earrings. There is also an “excep-
tional” selection of loose stones in a wide range of price brackets. Customers can select a stone to be crafted into a one-off piece by Pascoes’ manufacturing jewellers.
Jade carvings can also be found amongst the stock, and jade jewellery set in 14 carat gold or sterling silver is available. Pascoes intend to carry an up-market range of Swiss watches which will complement its existing Pulsar and Lorus ranges. Watches will retain a high profile in the store, and Robyn believes they have the price range covered.
Its selection of diamond and coloured stone dress rings is small in number but big on style and quality. For something even more special, watch out for the one-off rings, handcrafted by Pascoes when a particularly lovely stone catches the jewellers’ eye.
