Supermarkets fight back
Poultry meat continues to increase with the latest Statistics Department figures showing an 11 per cent increase in December, 1989, since the beginning of 1988. The executive director of the Poultry Industry Association, Mr Bob Diprose, said this was in line with world trends where poultry was capturing an increasing share of the world’s total consumption of meat. World wide, poultry accounted for 24 per cent of
meat consumption in 39 developed countries, 30 per cent of the world’s total population, Mr Dipose said. The increased demand was the result of constant pricing, year-round supply, and the availability of consistently fresh meat, he said. “We are positive that consumption in this country will continue to increase significantly, gaining on world leaders in chicken consumption such as the U.5.A.,” Mr Diprose said.
