Cautious bidding at Ashburton

The Ashburton County Fine Wool Two-Tooth Ewe Fair yesterday drew some cautious bidding, with the top price well below that of last year. The first Ashburton ewe fair of the year began slowly, but picked up when the Border Corriedale ewes were introduced. The top price was reached with ttie final offer for 100 Border Corriedales from the Tyron Farm, in Fords Road, which fetched $31.75 each. Top price at last year’s sale was $4O. Ninety-one ewes from S. K. and N. R. Hydes, of Buccleugh, sold for $30.25, the top Corriedale price. The total yarding was about 6900, the same as other years. Sale auctioneers described the market for well-bred sheep as reasonable, although poorer types were harder to sell. The drought had caused a lack of condition on some Corriedales.
