All eyes on Hypervain at Ellerslie today

Special correspondent Auckland Hypervain, trying for a fifth win on end, will be the main attraction at the Auckland Racing club’s meeting at Ellerslie today. There can be no denying that clever placing by his trainers, Colin Jillings and Richard Yuill, has helped Hypervain greatly toward his run of success. Equally certain is the three-year-old being a particularly smart young galloper. Last time he went a record 1:9.59 for 1200 metres on Ellerslie’s new course where he will race again today, over 1300, in the second leg of the T.A.B. double. In his last two wins Hypervain carried 56kg and, as a concession to his now being in class two, he gets into today’s Lion Red 1300 with Ikg less and just 4kg more than the bottom weight. If Hypervain’s winning sequence is halted it will be, most likely, by Crossword, Lavante or Highly Regal. Crossword, though five years old, has had no more than 14 races, having to be stopped a couple of times, at least, by leg trouble. From his last four attempts he managed two wins and a second, the more recent of his successes with an impressive performance over 1400 metres at Avondale on January 17. He went 1:22.23 on that occasion — great time for class three. Both Hypervain and Crossword drew out, Hypervain with No. 10 and Crossword, with No. 12. That could count against them more than a trifle; Highly Regal and Lavante are better placed, at No. 5 and No. 6 respectively. Hypervain’s stable has a strong prospect, too, in the first leg of the double, the Air New Zealand Transtasman, with Romantic Lover, a four-year-old mare who is making a name for herself as one of the most consistent horses in the intermediate grades, and All Nighter. All Nighter looks an improved four-year-old. The way he won over this 1575 metres last time, on January 30, was pretty impressive.
