Customs Dept to lay off staff

PA Wellington Thirty management positions in the Customs Department will be axed in proposals revealed publicly by the Comptroller of Customs, Mr Murdoch Taylor. With about 1000 staff, the department is already 20 per cent smaller than it was three years ago. About 300 jobs disappeared as a result of changing Government policies and restructuring. Mr Taylor said all levels of management would be affected by the changes, "from right below the top level to supervisor level.” ‘

He would not comment on individuals concerned. The biggest job losses will be in Wellington (six in the regional office and 13 at head office) and in Auckland, where 10 jobs will go. Small numbers of jobs will be lost in Whangarei, Palmerston North, Napier, Dunedin, and Invercargill. Some extra jobs will be created in New Plymouth, Nelson, Timaru and four in the Wellington head office. The management changes are some of the biggest affecting the department in the last 10 years.
