Stonemasons, Mr Tom Mills (left) and Mr Jim Cornlie, pause in their preparations for shifting the statue of Captain James Cook in Victoria Square yesterday. The statue, and that of Queen Victoria, are being shifted to the axis of what was once the continuation of Victoria Street through the square. The Captain Cook statue had a time capsule inserted when it was installed in 1932. This will be opened by the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay,, when the statue is shifted.
New material relating to 1989 will be inserted and the time capsule will be placed beneath the statue. The stonemasons are investigating how the statue is constructed so the sequence of dismantling and reconstruction can be planned. The shift will be made after February 13, when the statue of Queen Victoria will be shifted. The work is being supervised by the Christchurch City Council’s Parks and Recreation Department as part of the square’s redevelopment.
