YACHTING

Four classes produced dual winners during the annual Waitangi Day regatta, sailed on Lyttelton harbour. In the Zephyrs, Jim Park won both races for the day; Murray Philpott managed the feat in the A class catamarans; Aaron Goodmanson won both races for the P class and Neil Briggs and Dean Hyde took the Phase II honours.

It was a good result for Briggs, who until now has done most of his sailing in the P class. Over all the entries were disappointing, with official entries at 116. However, one of the stronger fleets was that of the 4705, which have been building up their numbers all season.

As part of an effort to develop the 470 in Canterbury, the Olympic Games yachtsman Murray Jones was flow from Auckland to conduct a coaching school last week-end. Jones helped out at Lyttelton for the regatta as well, sailing in different boats for the two races. He and Steve Page finished second in the second race. Results:—

SPEEDWAY

Mark Thorpe was a clear winner of the South Island under 21 solo title raced at Ruapuna Park International speedway on Monday evening. Thorpe, aged 18, continued his recent good form that brought him victory in the senior South Island title and third in the New Zealand championship and will now go into the national under 21 final, to be held at Ruapuna later this month, as favourite.

Eleven local riders and Invercargill’s Ricky Bennett contested a series of heats to find the top eight qualifiers for the national final, with the top six riders then riding off for the first three placings. Thorpe was untroubled to win his opening heat and also dominated' his semi-final to beat Bradley Stockton, with Jacqui Mauger third. Mauger, a niece of the former world champion, Ivan Mauger, pressed Stockton hard over the opening lap then dropped back through mechanical trouble.

The other semi-final had to be rerun after Darren Hopewell was tossed heavily to the ground. In the rerun Justin Monk took the lead from Bennett and Peter Hollow, the positions remaining unchanged until the chequered flag. In the final Thorpe made his usual lightning start and victory was never in doubt, with Bennett holding second place from Monk and Mauger.' Larry Ross was untroubled to take all his division one

races. Alan Fisher had his best meeting of the season, with a win and several minor placings. Wayne Denovan continued to hold his lead in the Canterbury midget car championships after coming into the second round unbeaten. The former national champion drove his Mercedes Benz machine to a win in the fourth heat, trailing Graham Fineran for most of the race until Fineran’s VW jumed out of gear. In the other two heats Denovan picked up a fourth and second placing with the wins going to Fineran and Steve Duff. Mark Williams and New Plymouth’s John Rae were the pick of the sprintcar drivers, with Williams setting a new record in winning the opening race. Rae reversed the roles in the final two races. A three-quarter midget car driver, Chris Beach, recorded three wins with the’ feature race producing a spectacular roll by Doug Solos. — N.Z. under 21 title, South Island qualifying, heat 1: M.
