New cervical cancer tests
PA Auckland A fast technique for treating cervical abnormalities has been used at National Women’s Hospital for three months. Women can be diagnosed and treated in one visit and, unlike previous methods, it can be performed under local anaesthestic as an outpatient service. The technique — developed in Bristol and used overseas for four years — involves removing abnormal tissue with a large loop called the Prendivalle loop. The method is an advanced version of one performed under general anaesthetic using Cartier’s loop. A National Women’s obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr Mark Insull, said it was an improved modification of existing technology. He said the method was quicker and because it removed a whole block of tissue, it enabled pathologists to see the lesion’s extent.
