Hope for new breast machine

Trust funds could be used to buy a new breast screening machine, worth $125,000, for the Canterbury Hospital Board.

The board has been told that replacing the outdated machine at Christchurch Hospital should be a top priority. A member of the board, Mrs Caroline Cartwright, asked what action was being taken to find the money for the machine.

“I understand resources from trust funds are being investigated in order to find resources for the replacement of this equipment,” she said.

An executive officer in the board secretariat, Mr Peter Hines, said the director of finance had been asked to pro- 1 vide the policy committee with a list of trust funds that could be available. The chairman of the health services committee, Mrs June Gardiner, said the request was “obviously somewhere in the system" and the committee would wait for further information.

In a report to the board late last year the chairman of radiology services, Professor Robin Gibson, said the existing mamography machine, installed in 1977, was obsolete.
