Hawke free-trade moves
NZPA-AAP Seoul The Australian Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, is expected to announce today his support for AsianPacific moves to counter the world’s two big trading blocs, Western Europe and North America. During his first round
of talks with South Korean President, Roe Tae Woo, Mr Hawke yesterday discussed fears that the two blocs could further threaten free world trade. Mr Hawke said later he would not comment on their discussions, but
would have more to say today when he delivers an important speech to Korean industry leaders. Australia until recently has preferred to work towards freer trade, particularly in agriculture, through the Uruguay Round 'of multi-lateral
trade negotiations of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade But especially since the lack of progress at the mid-term review of the round in Montreal in December, the Government has started actively looking at other options.
