Firm gets nod for air-freight service
Political reporter An Auckland company, Southern World Airlines, Ltd, has succeeded in its bid to become New Zealand’s second international air carrier. The company has been granted a licence to run a weekly scheduled airfreight service between New Zealand and the United States. The Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Jeffries, said the company would also run a world-wide charter service using a leased DCB-63F aircraft. “Together with the recent sale of Air New Zealand, this will begin a new, competitive era for our international airline
industry,” the Minister said. Former Air New Zealand pilots and a group of Auckland investors were behind the company, Mr Jeffries said. The airline expected the demand for charters to focus on services between New Zealand and Japan, Australia, SouthEast Asia and South America, he said. In spite of 20 international airlines serving New Zealand exporters still faced series shortages of cargo space, especially to Japan, said Mr Jeffries. “Southern World Airlines is proposing to help meet these seasonal peaks in demand.”
