Meeting to test support
A Lyttelton group opposing the amalgamation of Lyttelton Borough with greater Christchurch is calling a public meeting. A spokeswomen for the Lyttelton Anti-amalgation Lobby, Mrs Noeline Lester, said the aim of the meeting was to gauge community feeling. Mrs Lester said the last public meeting in the town had shown clearly that the people of Lyttelton did not want to be included in the Christchurch district. The meeting will be chaired by Mrs Margaret Murray and attended by the member of Parliament for Lyttelton, Dr Peter Simpson. Mrs Lester said it was also hoped that Sir Hamish Hay and a member of the Local Government Commission would attend. Mrs Lester said a rally would be held to let people know what Lyttelton thought of the commission’s proposals for the area. Any action could be centred on the tunnel road between Lyttelton and Christchurch. The meeting is to be held in the Lyttelton Recreation Centre at 8 p.m. on 9.
