Sea legs, will travel
By
JANE DUNBAR
An artificial leg might prevent some from sailing round the world — but not a retired Christchurch butcher, Ed Nichols. Mr Nichols and his wife, Shirley, sailed out of Lyttelton yesterday on their yacht Solveig. Both in their 60s, they are experienced sailors. Mr Nichols lost part of a leg, from the knee down, after a motor-cycle accident, but has not allowed it to be a problem. He has been sailing for 20 years and is a keen skier.
Mr and Mrs Nichols plan to sail to England via Cape Horn. They have no fixed plans for stops along the way, except for a visit to the Falkland Islands. The Solveig, built at Governor’s Bay, has been owned by the Nichols since 1973. The yacht has taken them on two trips to Australia and New Caledonia. Once they get to England they might leave the yacht there for a few months and fly home to New Zealand for a skiing season.
