Dept seeks advice on Sunday ban

By

RICHARD CRESSWELL

The Labour Department is seeking legal advice on the prosecution of a shop which opened on Sunday in breach of shop trading legislation in Christchurch. The Cycle Warehouse opened for eight hours on Sunday and could face a fine of up to $lOOO under the legislation. A South Island labour inspector, Mr Keith Moran, said prosecution could take up to three months. The department had received no complaints against another shop which also opened on Sunday, he said. Unless there were complaints the department had no evidence the shop had been open and it could take no action. However, others had called to ask whether they were entitled to open. A retail official for the Southern Distribution Workers’ Union, Mr Brandon Hooper, said the union had complained about the Cycle Warehouse trading on the Sunday. He did not know if a complaint had been lodged against the clothing shop.
