Australia wins test by seven wickets

NZPA-AAP Sydney The Australian captain, Allan Border, hit the winning runs to steer his side •to a seven-wicket win over West Indies on the final day of the fourth test at Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday. When Border hit the spinner, Carl Hooper, to the boundary he pushed Australia passed the 80 runs required for the win, Australia’s first in tests since beating Sri Lanka in Perth early in 1988. Border was left on 16 and his partner, Dean Jones 24, while the West Indian wickets in the 82 for three scoreline went to Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose and Viv Richards. Border was named “man of the match” after his superb bowling efforts' of 7 for 46 in the .West Indies first innings and 4 for 50 in the second. He also hit 75 runs in the Australian first innings and was unbeaten in the second. It was a welcome win for Border who in 38 tests has won seven, lost 13, drawn 17 and tied .one since he took over from Kim Hughes midway during the 1984-85 season.

Border is the only Australian captain to have taken 11 wickets in a test against the test playing nations. The Australian selectors have recalled the N.S.W. pace bowler, Michael Whitney, for the fifth and final test against the West Indies starting in Adelaide on Friday. Whitney takes over from the West Australian paceman, Terry Aiderman, who damaged a hamstring during the fourth test. The Australian squad for the fifth test is: Geoff

Marsh, David Boon, Mark Taylor, Dean Jones, Allan Border (capt), Steve Waugh, lan Healy, Peter Taylor, Trevor Hohns, Merv Hughes, Michael Whitney, Tim May. The selectors have given Whitney an indication that he will be in the Ashes squad for England this year. They want to take a left-arm paceman and Whitney has been given another chance in his thirtieth year to resume his stop-start career.
