Plucky performance by Toleafoa
PA Auckland An Auckland teenager, Claudine Toleafoa, yesterday gave a plucky performance before losing to the second seed, Gretchen Magers, of the United States, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3), in the Nutri-Metics women’s tennis open yesterday. “I’m quite pleased with my performance,” Toleafoa said. Toleafoa, who turns 19 in April and has
a world ranking of 238 said: “I didn’t feel like a wildcard entry, that I shouldn’t be on the court and couldn’t beat her. "I tried my best, made her play everything and hoped I could hang in there and do well.” There were a couple of surprises yesterday when Swede Maria Lindstrom beat American Anna Ivan in three sets, while Donna Faber also from the
United States, easily defeated the higher-ranked Canadian Rene Simpson. The 16-year-old third seed, Conchita Martinez, of Spain, played the big points well in beating Maria Strandlund, of Sweden. The American Halle Cioffi, the . fourth seed, easily beat Australian Michelle Jaggard, while the fifth seed, Sandra Wasserman, of Belgium, was defeated by
Andrea Temesvari, of Hungary 7-5, 6-0.
