Evangelist eyes Square pulpit

A Scottish Church of God evangelist, Mr Malcolm Macdonald, is hankering to have a crack at preaching in Cathedral Square. A Canadian evangelist colleague told him it was well worth doing and Mr Macdonald is keen to give it a try. He is a full-time evangelist with the Church of God in Wishaw, Scotland, and is in New Zealand for three months, most of which will be spent in Christchurch. A former physics teacher, Mr Macdonald will be preaching on Sunday evenings at the Church of God Christchurch premises in Westminster Street, on the topic of the exodus from Israel to Egypt. He will also be doing youth work, talking to women’s church groups and hopes to talk in schools. Mr Macdonald also hopes to set up a literature stand in Cathedral Square on Fridays. Worship in the Church of God was led by male missionaries and evangelists. Open air preaching while no longer as common as before was still practised by Church of

God evangelists in Scotland, Mr Macdonald said. The Church of God is an offshoot of the Open Brethren and started in Britain about 100 years ago. A belief in Jesus Christ, the gospels, faith, repentance and reborn belief acknowledged by adult baptism are central to the religion. The Church of God is active in several countries and is administered by elders. Evangelists regularly travel overseas to preach.
