Chuin, McKendry’s Stakes choice

Special correspondent Auckland Maurice McKendry’s decision to drive Chuin in the $20,000 New Zealand Futurity Stakes at Rotorua today seems to be as good a guide as any to the outcome of the two-year-old feature. McKendry is the regular reinsman of the talented Chuin and Rameka, but he has decided to drive the former. The country’s leading reinsman thinks there is not a lot between the pair on ability and a major factor in choosing Chuin was his handy barrier draw. Today’s Futurity Stakes was originally not on Chuin’s programme. His Pukekohe trainer, Brian Hughes, however, changed his mind when the race was rescheduled to today after the Rotorua Harness Racing Club was forced to abandon its December 31 meeting because of the wet weather. Chuin was spelled after his impressive

debut success at Alexandra Park on. October 22. In the last week he has shown he is cherry ripe for a big effort today after comfortable wins at the Alexandra Park trials last Wednesday and the Pukekohe workouts on Sunday. Rameka has been in good touch lately and he will not lose anything in driving talent after Brent Mangos was confirmed as the colt’s pilot yesterday. His last run was an easy two and three-quarter length win at Cambridge on January 6. He has since won a trial at Cambridge last week and is primed for a top showing even from his awkward second line draw. The South Island will be represented by the capable pair of Toliver Trix and Dandy Candy — a winner at her last start at Addington on January 18.
