Hunt on for mosquitos

PA Auckland The Health Department has launched a hunt for mosquitos which may carry malaria. Health-protection officers from Whangarei to Hamilton are collecting mosquito larvae samples and checking these for signs of the disease, which can. be fatal. The results are being collated at Auckland Uni-

versify by Dr Marshall Laird, a medical entomologist and world authority on disease-bearing insects. Dr Laird said the department made the study every 10 years. No malaria-carrying mosquitos had shown up in previous investigations, but this did not rule out the possibility that these could exist here. tttarm, humid areas in Ndßhland and Auckland

were ideal breeding grounds for mosquitos and there were many suitable habitats where the insects could thrive. New Zealand’s long, remote coast-lines also made it especially vulnerable to the importation of insects. J Insects could easily slip in undetected aboard private aircraft or yachts, unless a constant vigil vtfks maiifleined. ?
