Three on drugs charges
NZPA-AAP London Three people made a brief appearance in a London magistrate’s court yesterday in connection with a 2.6 tonne cannabis haul by Australian Federal police. Janine Parsley, aged 23, unemployed, Doghan Arif, aged 39, a businessman, and Akhbar Singh, aged 26, unemployed — all of South London and all British citizens — faced charges of conspiring to import and to supply a
prohibited drug. No pleas were entered and they were remanded to appear again on January 30. Singh and Parsley were allowed bail with conditions of residence and sureties totalling £55,000 ($155,763).“ Arif was remanded in custody. The three were arrested at the week-end when British police seized the $27.9 million shipment at Tilbury Docks, east of London.
The court appearances come after five months of surveillance by the A.F.P. of suspicious containers on Melbourne’s waterfront. The Federal police said the drugs originated in Thailand, were shipped from the Philippines to Melbourne, and then sent on to the United Kingdom via New Zealand. Several other international police forces were involved in the operation — Australia’s laraest drugs haul.
