O’Sullivan runners leading chances at Gisborne today

Special correspondent Gisborne

The presence of newcomers to the Poverty Bay meeting today could pose problems for follow’ers of first day form.

It is not often that the country’s top trainers, Dave and Paul O’Sullivan, are represented at Gisborne but they have two leading candidates for the second day in Ngatira Belle and Fuji. Ngatira Belle was a winner at the Thames meeting earlier in the month, but did not have much luck in the running in her next start at Te Rapa. She is by Diagramatic, which is recovering at Massey University after suffering a stifle injury. Ngawi Bay could do no more than win on Saturday and because of the lower minimum for the New Zealand Breweries Handicap, he comes in with half a kilogram less to carry. Irish Dew and Quadros are other newcomers. Quadros chased Taupey Girl home at Tauranga while Irish Dew was a winner before the holidays at Matamata. A major disappointment the first day was Lockins and he is capable of a lot better.

Dom Domingo hasn’t raced for more than a year but when he won on the track in August, 1987, it was his first run for a long time. Trainer, Keith Flynn of Hastings, has had a lot of faith in the Pag Asa gelding and it will surprise if he is not ready to make his presence felt again in the Gilbey Gin (N.Z.) Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double.

Alcidae won well on the first day. She is also favoured by the lower minimum, having 57kg again and Matthew Woods will claim I.skg. Conrad impressed when winning over 1200 metres on Saturday and must be a chance over the same distance again in the Corson Grain Handicap.
