Hillary will assess work
NZPA-Reuter Katmandu
Sir Edmund Hillary, the High Commissioner in New Delhi, will be assessing restoration of a monastery which has burned to the ground. The main part of Thyangboche monastery, a landmark for foreigners hiking to Mount Everest, has been razed, a Buddhist priest said. The priest, who flew by helicopter to the site high in the Himalayas, told reporters the ruins of the main prayer hall and the courtyard were still smouldering. The fire, apparently caused by an electrical fault, broke out late on January 19. Hikers camping at the monastery, a Sherpa tribal development centre, helped to save some of the religious books and paintings.
Sir Edmund said he planned to visit Katmandu to assess how he could help restoration.
