EMPLOYERS OF STAFF COVERED BY GENERAL CLERICAL AWARD January 25, 1989. To Employers of Clerical Staff, The New Zealand Clerical Workers Award talks have broken down for the second time. Nationwide Stopwork meetings of workers covered by the award are to be held on a recommendation for a three day strike on February 2,3, 7, 1989. Employer representatives have demanded a profound change to the award relating to part-time and full-time work. The Employers’ Advocate acknowledges this change could result in full-time workers having their hours and consequently their pay cut. It may also mean that clerical workers could be required to work full-time for part-time wages. The Union is not opposed to change provided proper safeguards exist. Reasonable compromises put up by the Union, Chief Mediator and some employers have all been rejected outright. Your representatives have not been prepared to amend their position since day one of the negotiations. We know employers are divided and suspect that a small minority are holding thousands of employers to ransom. Most of you do not want to impose worse conditions on your clerical workers. Why support those that do? A sensible approach by your representatives can resolve the breakdown. A 4% rise for your clerical workers, in line with other award settlements and one of the compromises already suggested will settle the award. The award covers all workers and employers. This means any action taken will affect everyone. If you would like further information or to discuss the issue please ring me on (04) 843-749 or contact your local Clerical Union Office. Yours faithfully, JOHN SLATER, National Secretary. Inserted by New Zealand Federated Clerical Administrative and Related Workers Association
