$NZ under US63c
PA Wellington The New Zealand dollar closed below US63c yesterday after falling to that level overnight and experiencing a day of quiet narrow-range trading. The New Zealand dollar closed at U562.62/82C, eight points down on its opening U562.70/90 and well down on its close on Wednesday of 63.05/20C. On the cross rates at yesterday’s close the kiwi dollar was worth Aust73.s7c, 1.12 Deutsche marks, 35.13 pence, 78.99 yen and 0.9496 Swiss francs. The Reserve Bank trade weighted index slipped during the day and closed at 59.8 after its opening 60.0
In Sydney the Australian dollar closed easier, near its lows for the day, after a strong rally in the U.S. currency. The unit was at U 585.00/ 20c by 5 p.m., from its opening at 85.20/40C and Wednesday’s 85.35/55C. Against other currencies it last traded at 1.5243/87 Dm from Wednesday’s close of 1.5167/11, 1.2894/33 Swiss francs from 1.2803/50 and 106.90/24 yen from 106.56/89. It also firmed to $NZ1.3540 from 5NZ1.3305/57 and 47.59/78p from 47.34/48p. The U.S. dollar closed sharply higher in thin trading on Wednesday (early yesterday N.Z. time) to 1.7890 Dm from 1.7770/80.
