Wartime thief pays up
NZPA-ReuterNaples, Italy A thief who stole food and cigarettes from United States forces in Italy during World War II has said sorry more than 40 years later with a payment of 10,000 lire ($12.60). The money was sent to N.A.T.O.’s Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH) offices in Naples with an anonymous letter postmarked Ancona, eastern Italy. “Please find enclosed 10,000 lire for biscuits, condensed milk and a small carton of cigarettes and other items stolen during the last war,” the letter said.
