Brolly slows runaway rider
PA Auckland A public-spirited shopper thrust his umbrella through the spokes of a motor-cycle wheel yesterday to prevent the rider escaping a traffic officer in hot pursuit.
But the rider untangled the umbrella before speeding off, only to fall from his machine soon after.
He was taken to Auckland Hospital with minor injuries.
The incident started when Ministry of Transport officers in the area to help a colleague trailing a stolen car spotted the 18-year-old riding a motor-cycle with no number plate. They chased him after he failed to stop. He rode through an Onehunga shopping mall, pursued by one officer.
Several shoppers stood back to let the motorcycles pass, but one middle-aged shopper
lunged at the trail bike’s wheels with his umbrella. “It held him up, but he took off again the wrong way up a one-way street,” the shopper said. The M.O.T. is considering charges, including dangerous driving. The stolen car was abandoned by three men and a helicopter was used to tail them. The 20-year-old driver of the car will appear in the Auckland District Court at Auckland today charged with unlawfully taking a car, and a 23-year-old will be charged with unlawfully getting into the car.
