Obituary Mr Jim Scouler
PA Dunedin Mr Jim Scouler, one of Otago’s most valued golf players and administrators, has died, aged 86. Mr Scouler, a New Zealand golf selector for 25 years, was born in Scotland in 1902, and emigrated to New Zealand when he was 23. While still in Scotland, he played first division soccer for the Scottish amateur club, Queens Park, and was first introduced to golf at a private course near his home.
Mr Scouler held every office at the Otago club between 1939 and 1956, and in 1948 was elected to the Otago Provincial Golf Association. In 1950 he become Otago’s delegate to the New Zealand Golf Association — a position he kept for the next 25 years.
Mr Scouler became a New Zealand golf selector the following season and remained on the panel until his retirement in 1974. During this term he managed the New Zealand golf team on four
occasions. As well as golf, Mr Scouler also pursued his interest in soccer after coming to New Zealand, and represented Otago in the sport for 10 years. He captained the provincial team in the 1927-1929 seasons. Mr Scouler turned his hand to lawn bowls — joining the Balmacewen club and scooping 14 club championship titles in the pairs and fours. He also won four Dunedin Centre champion of champion titles.
